OPTIONAL WRITING CREDIT REQUIREMENTS
I. SUBJECT MATTER
-
Any topic of the student's choice is tentatively acceptable, provided it
examines the economic environment of a particular social phenomenon.
-
Students are encouraged to research issues relevant to their chosen fields
of study. For example, a nursing major recently examined the impact
of government legislation on supply and demand in this critical service
market.
-
Other students have successfully reported on various social problems, such
as drugs, poverty, discrimination, immigration, environmental deterioration,
etc.
-
For those who have no idea where to begin, Parts VII and VIII of the McConnell
text offer a wide variety of topics plus related references. Internet
searches (Yahoo or Alta Vista) often provide valuable insights and sources,
as do various programs presented daily on National Public Radio (WLRN,
91.3 FM, www.npr.org) and Television (Channel 2).
II. PROCEDURES
-
Students are required to submit a rough outline for tentative approval
within the first full month of the semester. A finalized outline
must be submitted before the midsemester W-deadline date.
| NOTE: |
NO paper will be accepted without inclusion
of the original finalized outline, duly signed and dated by the instructor! |
-
Once the final outline has been approved, students may begin to research
and compile on their own. Should any problems arise, they are free
to consult with the instructor.
-
Students are encouraged to apply simple diagrammatic analysis wherever
possible.
III. PRESENTATION
-
The paper must be 3,000 words in length, typewritten, and double-spaced
(approximately 10-12 pages).
-
Neither the outline nor the references, both of which must be included,
count towards the word/page requirement.
-
Footnotes and specific references to the bibliography are expected and
must be properly documented according to generally accepted standards.
-
At LEAST five outside (and current) sources are required,
excluding both McConnell and any other resources used in class during the
semester. Internet sources, correctly documented, are strongly encouraged.
