How To Read Your Science Text

  1. Read the introduction.
  2. Scan major headings. Try to understand the order in which the topics are introduced.
  3. Go back to the first of the chapter. Read the first topic carefully.
  4. STOP. Ask yourself what you read. Vocalize this.
  5. If you cannot vocalize material in the topic, reread.
  6. After you are satisfied that you can state in your own words what is said in the first topic, ask yourself questions, out loud, about the topic.
  7. Continue to the next topic.
  8. After completing all topics, see if you can summarize the entire chapter in your own words.
  9. If there are questions at the end of the chapter, try answering without referring to that section of the text.
  10. REMEMBER - READ FOR COMPREHENSION!
